Paramus, New Jersey – The young original with all of the labels has had an up and down season by his own admission, but after a solid final round 69, at The Northern Trust, Bryson DeChambeau sits atop the Fedex Cup Rankings.
Labeled as the “Mad Scientist” by many, DeChambeau started the final day at the Northern Trust 16 under par and a four-stroke lead over Keegan Bradley (who fired a blistering third round 62 on Saturday). Bryson finished at -18, enough for the same four-shot margin on a day that provided very little drama. Bradley went the other way Sunday posting a 7 over par 78 to finish tied for 34th at 5 under par.
Quite the turnaround for the former SMU standout from Clovis, California – from his final round collapse on the European tour last month. Since then, Bryson has worked even harder, feeling that learning from the experiences has contributed to his growth, “I’ve never been the most talented, but I feel like I’ve always had to work twice as hard to be just as good as others.”
Even after his third round 63 at the Northern Trust, DeChambeau headed back to range to work. “63, it’s not birdieing every hole, so there’s always room for improvement,” he said. ” Even if you shoot 59, there’s been guys this year, Brandt bogeyed a hole. 59 is fantastic, we’re always looking to improve no matter what.”
The win was DeChambeau’s second this season, and his third career title on the PGA Tour (he also won Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial at Muirfield Village earlier this season).
Tony Finau finished solo second at -14 after a final round 68.
The current Fedex Cup Standings after the Northern Trust:
1. Bryson DeChambeau
2. Dustin Johnson
3. Justin Thomas
4. Tony Finau
5. Brooks Koepka
Chambeau seems to be a lock as one of Captain Furyk’s Team USA Ryder Cup picks (along with Tiger and Phil). The big question now is, who will get the 4th pick and final spot on the squad?
